masthead A collection of observations, notes and comments on the rendering of skies and related phenomena. Since POV Ray is my rendering engine of choice, most of the references are directed toward POV scene description language.

Oct. 12, 2002:  Welcome to the semi-official opening of this web site. Often I see a CG rendered image which is good looking in many respects, but has a mediocre treatment of certain key elements which involve skies, clouds, and/or atmosphere. I also have seen numerous questions on how to handle some of these atmospheric elements. This site is (in part) my collection of exploratory solutions to some of these issues in the spirit of TGLTLSBFSSP. (The other reason was the simple self serving goal of creating My Very Own Web Site).

If these pages prove to be of any use to you, the reader, I'd love to know. As I try my best to credit any sources, I ask you to do the same. Beyond that, since these are intended to be informational pages, please let me know of any errors, or misinformation.

Media Atmosphere Work - Sep. 7, 2002

To come up with a moderately straight forward atmospheric model to use in POV has been one of my longer standing projects. I have pretty much by-passed the idea of a realistic physical model in favor of something that is controllable and looks good. I must say, my favorite crib so far is Terragen and the arrangement of (in POV) fog ("simple haze"), blue scattering media ("atmospheric blue") and absorption media ("light decay - red") seems to behave promisingly.

notes
Simple Light-sourced Clouds: a technique for faking cloud illumination.
Texture Fog: applying the appearance of fog with textures.
POV sky_sphere notes: some comments relating to working with sky domes.
